Anyone planning on attending on Sunday? (March 5)
I can't go Saturday b/c I have some live music booked - if anyone is in town Saturday night and looking for a place to grab food and drink, hit me up.
Then maybe we can do a round robin or something on Sunday, as I'm assuming there won't be any organized Vintage events...

Played a few games since... had 2 (?!?) W turn 1 Necro and went 12 (got the win) and was gonna go 15 but they conceded as I was exiling... so definitely seems like I need to be pushing it harder than I was.
So basically, playing Necro should be an, "I win next turn" proposition instead of slowly pulling ahead in card advantage. Always thought I wasn't using this correctly... thank you!!

    • I'm playing turn 1 Necro in DD wrong...

I see a thread on Reddit about this in EDH but wanted to ask specifically regarding VIntage Doomsday.
How many cards do you Necro for, in a general sense, for a swamp, ritual, Necro turn 1 in DD? 15-17? Or 5-7?

Of course it depends, but in general... do you go big or stay conservative? Does it primarily depend on whether or not you're holding one of the combo pieces?

I find myself almost always drawing up to 9 by then kicking myself a turn or 2 later. Is the correct play to go big or go home?

I'm not seeing a topic for this... was it ever discussed?
I've been playing 1 Main and 1 SB in Mono-U for a little while, and it can be a dagger. Just no room for a counter at 2 w/o an alternate cost? It's nice to exile a Walk or Ancestral, but Preordain, PO, sometimes Ritual, and especially FoW are a few of the things I've hit with this that likely made a big difference. Even if it can't completely stop a Flusterstorm, removing the threat of any more from the game is nice.

I have had it in my opening hand or early in the came a couple of times where I wished it had been Flusterstorm, but it's worked more times than it hasn't.

      What am I missing?

ok, this is working much better even against the random MTGO meta... I almost never even cast Tendrils though... almost always end up slotting them out for Tormod's or Create Removal, depending... still needs some work... I'd be happy with a 33% win rate.
Thank you guys for your suggestions!!

Swamp x15 (prolly at least 1 too many)
      Strip Mine x1
      Wasteland x2

      Black Lotus
      Mox Jet
Jet Medallion (I know, I know... but against non-super-competitive decks it can be money)
      Tormod's Crypt

Banehound x2 (haste and lifegain? please.)
      Dark Ritual x4
      Duress x4
Vampiric Tutor (basically only for Will)

Cabal Ritual x3 (almost ready to get rid of these)
Chains of Mephistopheles x2 (secret tech! secret PROXY tech... wow $$)
Demonic Tutor (Will he or won't he Will)
      Hymn to Tourach x4
Order of the Ebon Hand x2 (Fallen Empires doesn't suck!!!!)
Sinkhole x4 (zapping the sole Volcanic in a Breach deck feels good... and I just love these black-bordered beauties)

Mind Drain x2 (I dunno... it fits the theme...?)
      Yawgmoth's will (duh)
Hero's Downfall (I need to replace this main deck... really wanted to include Beta Terror... but... artifacts........)
      Hyptnotic Spectre x4

Lilliana of the Dark Realms x2
Tendrils of Agony x1 (I tried with 4... it just wasn't working)

Drain Life x1 (I just love winning on a DL...)

      Sideboard
      Tormod's Crypt x3
Terror x4 (I've never used them... they need to go)
Order of the Ebon Hand x2
Dark Banishing x2 (these are actually helpful)
      Hero's Downfall
Tendrils of Agony x3 (again... never used)

This is MUCH better than the previous build... obviously still some work to do, but thank you guys again!

@revengeanceful said in Current Decks for Casual 5-color Vintage (mono-W ideas?):

@schmakt I just don't see how the black deck will ever be competitive with the others given its focus on land destruction and the use of demons as the win conditions. If I was trying to do something casual competitive with black, I'd either go with Storm combo or some sort of aggressive deck with cheap creatures and hand destruction (Thoughtseize, Duress, etc.).

The more I mess with it the more I am in agreement... I've only been able to get that single MTGO win with it by way of a Drain Life. LD as an attempt to get Black Vise to fire is just useless. Dropping the Vises completely and going with disruption instead seems better. And will give me a reason to play some Fallen Empires cards with that killer Quinton Hoover (R.I.P.) art! Lotus/Ritual + Hippie is at least as much fun as Lotus/Ball Lightning too....

@botvinik said in Current Decks for Casual 5-color Vintage (mono-W ideas?):

DPS seems the maost natural place to go with a mono/heavily black vintage deck in general and is more beginner friendly then the control/combo hybrids like doomsday or tinker.

DPS, in general, seems relies a lot on U to get the Storm count up, but... a non-lethal Tendrils can still flip a game.

      Thank you both!
I'm going to drop all of the 3-cost LD, the Vises, and most (maybe all) of the Demons and see what I can do with more disruption and smaller guys. Maybe even find a place for equally badass Ron Spencer FE art on the black Order

EDIT: Goodness... Thoughtseize damned near as expensive online as it is on paper. That might be down the road.

    • Mana Burn? What Mana Burn, but Under 4th Edition Rules...?

So how nice is it that MTGO decks are pocket change for the most part?
I had no idea and have been having so much fun playing a bunch of random stuff. Still putting most $$ into getting my paper decks complete, so I haven't bought all the blue staples and stuff online, but I'm getting there...

All of that said... I'm finding almost every game to be pretty exciting.
When's the last time you got killed by a Drain Life?

      But the question is...
Under 4th Edition rules, if I had only cast the DL for 20 and had 1 more land in play, could have have Yawg'd into the Cabal Rituals and then mana-burned myself so that we both died end-of-phase and the game was a tie?
Edit: It took me a long time of playing Arena before I realized that Mana Burn no longer existed...

Re: Current Decks for Casual 5-color Vintage (mono-W ideas?)

I ended up putting all of the Moxen in the green deck and pulling back on some of the search spells... it's much better now...

Made some changes to the red as well...
Adding Ball Lightning (Lotus/Ball is still just the best when it happens) and some more card draw: Light Up the Stage and Valakut Exploration

Now they both are playing ok online... black is struggling hard though...
haven't dropped the $$ to build Blue online yet...
Any thoughts about smoothing out Black?
I've added some Tormod's Crypts (SB) and Spheres of Resistance and cut back on the land destruction a bit. Only 5 demons running and the pair of drain lifes to win...
Black is the least fun to play...

    • Delver of Secrets in Mono-U

I'm still trying to catch up on the vintage history I've missed... looks like this card had a brief run but hasn't really been used in several years...

Is it completely unplayable in Vintage now? I'm running 4x Murktide and 4x Thing in the Ice in mono-blue (in a list i thought i swiped from here but can't find now)... maybe swap 2 Things for 2 of these to speed it up a little?

Worth even hanging onto a few of these? (As I get ready to dump all my stuff that's rotating out of Type-2)

I loved this card in Type 2... I really wish they had the option to restrict instead of ban...
I wanted to be able to make it work in T1... mostly for bouncing my own spell back and pulling some Flusterstorms out of my opponents' hands, but I couldn't quite find a place for it. Hoping that the Lesson mechanic comes back and includes something worth grabbing...

    • REB v Pyroblast

I'm sure this has been discussed, but I missed it...

Is the reason that PB is now preferred over REB because it can be cast against any target (and just fails if the target isn't blue) v REB only being able to be cast against a spell or permanent that is blue? (Hence adding to the Storm count)

    • RE: Current Decks for Casual 5-color Vintage (mono-W ideas?)

@botvinik I ended up going Hatebears with Lurus... and just put the jewelry in...
It holds it's own against mono-U Murktide/Thing in the Ice (the decklist for which I stole from here)

      Mono-green is prolly mid-tier

And the B/R above are bottom tier unless you get the right draw. Added Breach and Ball Lightning (I just love the card!) to R... and actually Jet Medallion... black is the worst usual due to not getting enough quick mana. Prolly needs a chrome Mox and/or Opal too...

Still working on it, but so far this is working out well, is pretty fun, and is garnering some attention from EDH players to hop over for a few games.

Might try to switch the Black to old school Necro and maybe Red to Goblins... but for now this project is working out well 🙂

    • Current Decks for Casual 5-color Vintage (mono-W ideas?)

Has anyone done this recently where I might be able to just steal a bunch of decklists? 🙂 I'm trying to build 5 mono decks that aren't just old-school cards so that I can have a game night round-robin kind of situation.

Each deck should be mono, use only the 1 in-color Mox, (and maybe the Chrome), Lotus, (maybe Petal), be mildly competitive but, mostly, be competitive in the metagame I'm trying to create and be fun to play...

I'm saving Blue til last, (is there ever a reason you wouldn't run Walk/Recall in mono-U??) but I'm having trouble finding anything to base my white deck on right now. I never really played White and only really knew it as White Weenie, but this aggro deck looks like a good starting point: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/4754768#paper

Would have to drop some of the jewelry of course... no real need for Wastelands...

Before I run out and start trying to build this thing, does anyone have any suggestions? Here are the 3 G/B/R decks I'm working with right now... still fiddling with them as G is pretty dominant. (none of these are mine... I lifted some decks online somewhere and made some minor modifications)

      Green Channel
(I'd like to find a place for 2 copies of a Planeswalker, but I don't know who... Wren and Seven?)
      Sol Ring
      Mana Crypt
      Black Lotus
      Mox Emerald
      Chrome Mox
      10x Forest

      4x Wurmcoil Engine
      4x Rosheen Meanderer
      4x Genesis Hydra
      2x Rhonas the Indomitable
      4x Mistcutter Hydra
      4x Elvish Spirit Guide
4x Arbor Elf (can swap for Llanowar in the SB)
      1x Emrakul, the Aeons Torn

      4x Tooth and Nail
      4x Green Sun's Zenith
      4x Genesis Wave
      1x Cultivate
      1x Channel

      4x Utopia Sprawl

      Black Land Destruction
      Black Lotus
      Mox Jet
      15x Swamp
      Strip Mine

4x Black Vise (thinking I will drop one for a Petal)
      4x Dark Ritual
      4x Cabal Ritual
      2x Hero's Downfall

      4x Sinkhole
      4x Ice Quake
      4x Rain of Tears
      3x Befoul
      Yawgmoth's Will

2x Liliana of the Dark Realms

      4x Desecration Demon
      4x Bloodgift Demon
2x Master of the Feast (maybe 2 more of these and 1 less of each of the above)

      Red Burn
      Black Lotus
      Mox Ruby
      Sol Ring
      13x Mountain
      4x Arid Mesa

      Chandra Torch of Defiance

      4x Vexing Devil
      4x Monastery Swiftspear
      2x Bonecrusher Giant

      Wheel of Fortune
      4x Chain Lightning
      4x Lava Spike
      4x Browbeat
      4x Flame Rift
      Fiery Confluence

      4x Lightning Bolt
4x Shock (was Price of Progress, but that didn't make sense here)
      2x Fireblast
Smash to Smithereens (prolly will lose this too... maybe another Chandra)

anyway... sorry if this is the wrong place...
but if anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear!
      Thanks 🙂
