Let the bigs dog off the leash. I.E gush, scroll, brainstorm, flash and let’s see how fast Mishra workshop drops from being a “pillar” of the format and the majority start crying to get chalice and thorn back instead of axing MWS.

At this point it’s a bunch of mish mosh. To be able to use empirical data based on meta game %’s to justify restrictions then just simply ignore them the next time around is utterly ridiculous.
The problem is that the artifacts they keep printing just keeping pushing the power creep further and further without hitting the acceleration. It’s not even like they try new mechanics with the artifacts like they do with the “blue” based cards which quickly get restricted the cards are just that silly.
I would rather play in a 4 trinisphere vs burning long vs u/r standstill era then this crap we’ve been force fed for the past 4-5 years.

LoL it cracks me up that players actually think the meta is changed/changing/evolving.

The same 3 "archetypes" pre restriction are still here post restriction.

The "combo" deck is only "better" because the mentor player isn't as explosive ( but can still be as dominant)

Shop decks haven't changed at all
(guess WotC guessed wrong on that one)

To me it all just stills feels the same...I'm not building decks to prepare for anything different from before

I'm not a huge fan of posting or replying due to the nature of people feeling singled out over understanding that there is a discussion that "could" be had, but how is it supposed to settle if it doesn't change ?

The WotC link was up while/ before you ran the numbers ?
I think it's great that you guys break down all the numbers for people but as much as it shows what's "changing" it's fuel for the lazy crowd that just wants to copy the FotW and not build or try anything new to be like "guess I gotta play this"

Drain and tfk were already a thing?
Painter is always a deck that sees play and can be just as dangerous as any other deck available ?

What happened to Drain Nahiri Moat control??
Mentor gets less explosive somehow that deck gets worse??

I don't feel that retooling the decks of yesteryear is a challenge in any right.
Which as you stated with a format as small as vintage is bound to happen.

Hell I've.been.beating people with an unplayable
1/1 trample for 2G for almost 2 years now in this supposeded mentor only era.

The main issue we're always going to have is that they have never been able to safely transition mechanics to the older formats unless they've lowered the support card counts.

Personally I thought the format was fine when 4 lodestone was a thing chalice was what put that deck over the top.
It was fine when 4 Gush was a thing. It took almost 3 years after the unrestriction
(read printing OP win-cons) before it even took off again and even still wasn't an issue until after they axed Tcruise and DTT.
The meta is still fine now. My issue is that anyone whose played vintage extensively for the last 12-15 years can see that all the decks we've seen recently are still those same decks just retooled to whatever draw engine is legal and with new overly hyper efficient win-cons. The premises are still the same.

Aggro
Combo
Control
Combo/Control
Shops

There are always going to be decks that can be played to prey upon whatever is on top of the hill but to say that it's changing is just something I don't understand.
People are always going to want to be able play X and not want to play against Y.

In any event @ChubbyRain @diophan thanks for your time and hard work to break down the numbers

More than likely I will not post in here again

@enderfall
Most of the times were definitely X=1 then scry to set up dbl land drops for acceleration or to get an uncounterable Leo or Hydra.

Twice I cast her on X= 4 then scry to set up a lethal attack.
She was forced 3 times Pyroblasted on the stack once and Pyroblasted after resolution on their turn on the draw once.

To me she's the 2nd best thing to get into play after Leovold. I play the hydras because if you stick one if they can't answer him they have to dig which just makes him bigger (this theory always applies to him IMHO) so his time can be at any point in the game.
Whereas Leovold and now Nissa are going to generate some kind of advantage. Whether it virtual (not letting the opponent cast their draw cards, wasteland you effectively or target your permanents or the filtering from Nissa) or real extra land drops off Nissa free uncounterable flips or a "cycling" if you can't protect Leo.

So far I've had great success with my personalized version of this deck. It's long been a theory of mine that it's very rare anyone can pick up someone else's tuned deck and find the same success but if you try to keep the core the same and work on the cards that suit you that the same success can be found.

Right now we're working on a version without managorger and preordain. A few of my teammates prefer a less aggressive deck/play style so they want to add mana drain and a more controlling aspect to be able to cast Nissa bigger and just lean on her to win games. She very much is the planeswalker I've been waiting for for quite a long time.

It also helps I'm notorious for putting new standard/type 2 cards that are deemed "unplayable" in my vintage decks 😈

As someone whose played quite a lot of storm in years gone past there are a few things I see that I would instantly change just based on new printings.

Draw 7's are weak, you already have enough artifacts to support paradoxical outcome so why aren't we trying that over those?

Based on having so many artifact mana the first Null Profusion Far outweighs the third Bargain.

4 duress to me seems wrong I personally have allows preferred a 2/2 split between thoughtseize and now with even even new hatebears available this split seems even better now. On the protection subject no mental missteps is ok as your playing 2 defense grids but I still think id want them somewhere.

4 Cabal rituals is excessive 2 was always my max. There is not alot this deck does with mox land Crit outside of Necro/Duress + Duress/Seize.

I like having ponder but having preordain seems wrong. In a list like this I hardly ever want to be using T1 for preordain when I could have Gifts/FoF to get max value of of my rituals + a mox and yet still I wouldn't be doing either of those over a T1 hand disruption effect.

You definitely want tink/bot or ETW having only 1 Drills with no burning wish is quite a liability.

Are you trying to tell us we should play Mox Pearl 🤔

First time playing with mishra at an event.
Had some great games and received a lot of insight about matchups and deck building.

Congrats to the top 8 it was great seeing everyone. The banter through out the day was fantastic, Mr. Dijohns and I were responsible for quite a few laughs.
Hope to see everyone in 2 weeks at TDG.

Hail Hydra!

After many many months of prodding from my teammates I decided to build my version of a ravager deck and take it for a test spin. One solid test session later we had our tweaks and came up with this

Blowout Blue Rust
4 Mishras Workshop
4 Seat Of Synod
4 Ancient Tomb
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy
2 Mox Opal
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Emerald
1 Black Lotus
1 Mana Crypt
1 Sol Ring
1 Trinisphere
1 Time Walk
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Lodestone Golem
4 Arcbound Ravager
4 Phyrexian Revoker
4 Etched Champion
4 Master of Etherium
2 Hangarback Walker
4 Thorn of Amethyst
4 Thoughtcast
3 Cranial Plating

My Sideboard was quickly put together and pretty shoddy.
Passed the maindeck on and another teammate Josh Barkon decided to try it with some changes of his own.
He lost in the top 4 to that savage Ryan Glackin after vanquishing him in the swiss.

24 ppl showed up at Deal me in games 5/14/16

Rd 1 Play against Stephen Grant on what seemed to be a fairly stock u/r pyro list Win

Rd 2 Play against Matthew Szczeblewski on the newly updated bob tendrils that have added white for mentors. Win

Rd 3 I get to play against the great Nicholas DiJohn and his eldrazi shop deck a fun and great series that ends with aliens smashing robots looking for blue mana. Lose

Rd 4 Against teammate Jonathan Geras testing out a u/w tempo list with Thalia Spirit of the labyrinth and meddling Mage Win

Rd 5 ID with Shawn Griffiths

Top 8 Andrew Turk paints my deck blue and it flips on turn 3 and turn 2 respectively! What a way to end the day

Overall for the first time piloting a mishra deck in a tournament was a fun ride and the deck was surprisingly fast and had some great synergies. Looking forward to working on it going forward

#blowouttrain

Hail Hydra!

This is actually very much the kind of card I've been looking for the bant/Bug managorger decks that I play.

Card filtering, extra lands or free creatures oh and an out to Moat or the resurfacing Stormtide Leviathan
All in one card??

Where do I sign up???

This will definitely make it into my deck

@brianpk80

The shop matchup hasn't been that abysmal for me but then I also play 3 managorger hydras in my deck.
Fatal push is an allstar against them as well as Null Rod. 3 Claims another Decay snuff out and murderous cut seemed to be fine for me.

Going forward I'm not sure how it might play out but when your main draw is painful truths and your just trying to play mana denial I'm not sure you can hang with Mishra.

After the gush restriction (as I've been playing gush BuG see EE6 results) I've been working on this...

1 Forest
1 Island
3 Misty Rainforest
2 Polluted Delta
1 Strip Mine
4 Tropical Island
4 Underground Sea
1 Verdant Catacombs

1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Null Rod

1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
2 Nissa , Steward Of the Elements

3 Deathrite Shaman
2 Jace, Vryn's Prodigy
3 Leovold Emissary Of Trest
3 Managorger Hydra

2 Abrupt Decay
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Brainstorm
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Dig Through Time
2 Fatal Push
4 Force of Will
1 Flusterstorm
1 Gush
3 Mental Misstep
1 Mindbreak Trap
1 Ponder
3 Preordain
1 Time Walk
1 Treasure Cruise

Obviously I'll need adjustments but they will be very dependent on how the mentor and shop decks shake out.

2-1 against Car Shops
2-0 PO Storm
2-1 Vs Jeskai Mentor

Then lost to dredge on some slight mana flooding.

A Nissa on 1 then scrying was strong every time I saw her she flipped a couple Leo's and Hydra's and was responsible for about 35 dmg over the course of the day. She caught quite a few FoW as well

@MSolymossy said in Vintage Restricted List Discussion:

@Fisken

I'll take @Smmenen, Rich Shay, or Tommy Kolowith on 4 Brainstorm/4 Ponder/4Gush/4Scroll GAT against Literally Anyone you'd pick on the Delve decks. Considering no real deck played both delve spells, and Gitaxian Probe was never really played in anything with the Delve Spells while either were restricted.

Tell ya what, I'll take @Smmenen with the exact 75 of his GAT Deck from 2007 WITH FUCKING OPT, because Ponder wasn't even printed yet over any player you pick with any of the Gush lists from 2012 and beyond that played any combination of Cruise, Dig, and Probe. The list has to be from an existing top 8.

Uhhhh I'm on your side ... no dig or cruise deck has nowhere the gasoline the old TTS decks or even gro had. When you can consistently beat Flash your deck might be overpowered

After reading through this thread I have a few thoughts most of which might hold no merit.
Prior to EE6 we tried Thoughtseize wastelands crucible bobs painful truths and most of the time they left us feeling flat. W/o Gush I definitely feel we lost the best draw engine but the addition of preordain helps your fixing (ala Dack) but cheaper.

Thoughts:

  • Tried white, but the mana doesn't work.

This is definitely true. I love the addition of red just for Dack pyro and either grudge/by Force. Personally I haven't had the time to try something like this myself yet but on paper it looks fantastic.

  • Wasteland is a requirement for this deck idea to work reliably. You must keep their mana occupied, whether through Wasteland or through answering your little threats. So, cutting Wasteland while keeping the deathrite/leovold/1-for-1 removal core of the deck just doesn't work very well.

I disagree here a little. I never felt like I wanted to be wasting my land drops on wastelands as most of my deck was very color intensive (Shaman/Leo/Decay and you guys are playing Dack)
One turn of me wastelanding them and them having a follow up land or me w/o an active DRS usually spelt doom.
Also Pete commented that CoW and DT were the worst cards if CoW is bad then wasteland will be worse as that's the main reason to play them together. if DT is bad then we don't have the right targets available in the deck. Every time we draw it we should be doing cartwheels in our head lol.

  • Leovold is really good!

End of story. He easily is one of my favorite creatures to play with and every time I resolve one I go right into "protect the queen" mode.

  • Thoughtseize is good against storm, bad against shops, semi-decent vs Mentor. Not sold on it either way; but I think its value is too variant to be worth it in the context of a large tournament. Also I'm not happy blind-fetching a sea into Wastelands in a shops-rich environment, given how tenuous the mana situation here is.

We found Tseize to just be bad. More often than not the blue decks can delve/jvp/snap their way back into the game as we're trying to play this long grindy game(which is a huge reason we ended up on Managorger). We opted for for card draw/selection which worked out great with the more solid no wastelands mana base.

  • I wish there were more good draw spells for this deck that aren't Preordain or Gush in Vintage. Merchant Scroll is a good addition for this archetype to this end.

The best thing we have really is nights whisper
And possibly painful truths and skeletal scrying (these two we could never really get behind due to having to gush still and our 3cc slot was jammed with Leo/Hydra)

  • I don't know which black removal spell is best. Murderous Cut is, I think, like 5% better than the rest but it's very close.

Snuff out was a house for me at EE and the 5 weeks after of top 4s and top 8s
Also not sure why we're eschewing fatal push here?
