    • RE: [AER] Whir of Invention

Sooo i have been testing this as a one of in a U/B key/vault outcome list. Its a pretty far break from the conventional lists i see people playing these days, but i think the card can have a place in many combo control lists. I had a chance to test it at a local event and went undefeated in the Swiss. As for Whir itself, the card won me the game outright 3 times on the day and pitched to force a few more (which i think is a pretty good track record for a one of at a small tourney). I can say the card is at least solid but i cant help feeling that there arnt better cards to be playing. I enjoyed the utility of Whir and am playing many one-of artifacts in the main and SB to take advantage of this. I would say if u r playing transmute artifact it is a strict upgrade, so there's that. Just my thoughts 🙂

This event was awesome, great prize payout and what a cool place to hold a tournament! I had the privilege of taking this one down (first tournament win ever BTW, though i have come close so many times) and I couldn't have had a better time with my vintage friends! My competition all day was fierce and every game seemed like an epic battle (the kinds of games you play vintage for.) I want to thank Alan and the depot team for organizing the event, and will I def be going to the next one they put together at the cradle!
      Cheers!

Hey Nick, Chris H here. As a person whom has attended the last three events, I plan on attending the any future events (if they happen) regardless of an increased cost or venue change. You have put together some of the most memorable events i have ever attended and i know how much time and effort it takes to put them together. The increased cost for prize support and bigger and better venues are real world problems. I think its normal that when your costs go up, that the entry fee would readjust to allow the event to continue.

@Griselbrother thanks for commenting! Forsake the Worldy was pretty good, i didn't have time to test that card specifically before the event but i liked a lot of the elements of the card. On the day it did it's job, exiled an oath and cycled a few times (the fact that its never a dead draw and kills null rod/stony was the main reason i played it). I have been brewing brewing paradoxical lists since the card was spoiled (seeing the obvious raw potential of the card) and was happy to see Brian K was doing similar things. I will admit I did steel his moat tech, never really dawned on me to play it in this style of deck but it was absolutely killer all day. As far as the land count, it does seem a bit light at first glance but i have been on 12 + 1sb for a while and it honestly feels like its in a real good place. I think I only mulliganed once all day and my prior testing has yielded similar results.

@Griselbrother So baleful strix is def the worst card in the list, but i think its invaluable in what it does for the deck. It synergizes really well with outcome, turns on your opals (and thoughcast if you r playing it) and provides you much needed time to set up your kills. I kind of think of it as the bridge card that gets you from early to late game as fast as possible. its def worse now with the printing of ballista, but in awkward matchups its an easy card to cut. Its the kind of card im rarely sad to see. I also don't think it belongs in every paradoxical list (def not the more balls out combo lists). my list is trying to be the hard control deck that turns into combo kills on a dime (at least thats what im going for :)).

Nick, would it be advantageous to have a scaling pre-reg entry fee (would be akin to an incremental early bird special)? Something like the first 20-50 people to preregister get it at the lowest price (say $100), then the next 20-50 people would pay $110 and then so on. It will incentivize people to register early and will let you gauge what kind of attendance to expect before you would normally.

    • RE: Classic Format

Hey nick, Soooo i know this goes against the technical rules of the format as they are stated currently, but do you think there could be allowances for new cards printed in old boarders ie. judge promos for crucible, hierarch, bob, swords and anything else wizards prints from here on out in the old boarder. Im not necessarily asking for right now, but once things start to settle and there is a more defined image of what the format will be. i think its a neat idea that would add some nuance to what is essentially a static format. This gives the potential for growth, albeit exceptionally slow (who knows if they ever make more) and adds a little more to innovation other then just restrictions/unrestrictions. just a thought.

I work for a non for profit to pay the bills, but I have been a professional fine artist/ illustrator all my life. I also work for an indie game publisher on the side. We were just at PAX showing off some of the wears and demoing like crazy! I would luv to do work for a big company like WOTC but thus far i have been unsuccessful. Maybe one day. Anyway if anyone is interested in checking out some of my work, here is the link. http://chris-hanson.deviantart.com/ -CHEERS-
