I get that reserve list cards are crazy expensive and for most people not worth buying. Where does that leave us for paper Vintage?
I like my cards, I like playing with them and I like seeing other peoples cards.
Whenever I bring up physical cards in a Vintage context people get very up in arms about costs.
So, let's yield to the idea that reserve list cards are proxies going forward where does that leave us. Is anyone buying paper cards for Vintage?
If all cards are proxies, then why bother? Why bother playing with cards that don't matter? If it is just to play the game then why not play a different format?
I am asking because I really want to know. I want to have an idea of what people think about paper cards in Vintage.

I have given up on trying to fight this. I just accept that cards cost a lot and play with. My friends can play with 100% proxies if they want. At the end of the day, its what you want to do to be able to play vintage. If you don't like vintage and your playing with proxies, I agree there are other formats to try. -
@john-cox There is no fight here. I would rather have paper Vintage, than not have it. I saw Bryant Cook post pictures of his various decks on YouTube and he was very proud of his cards.
Several content creators in Vintage have paper collections. The cards themselves are part of the game.
I am asking what does this look like going forward. I played in the SCG Con in 2018, which was non-proxy and I just cannot see that happening again. Where does that leave us?
I like paper cards and I will always chose formats where I can play "cards" in person over digital formats. I am not alone here. Where does this leave us?
I'm fine with proxies but why would a card store promote an all proxy event? How do we attract players where owning and acquiring cards is part of the game then say you don't need to do that here?

@marland_moore Where does it leave us? It very obviously leaves us in a place where there are next to no paper events. I don't see that changing unless individuals make a local effort to get events up and running in their community. You've asked this question a bunch of different ways a bunch of different times, I'm not sure what you're still looking for.

You can only proxy cards over X dollars is not unreasonable.

I'm looking some type of community where people play cards face to face that is not too far from me. I'd like to play Vintage but it appears that I just need to accept that it is not going to happen.

This leaves us exactly where we are today. In person non-proxy events are far and few between. Such events are only going to become rarer. Maybe in person Eternal Weekends will return as we exit pandemic times.
Do not get me wrong, I am saddened by this, but it is not likely to change for the better any time soon. I sporadically buy singles to stay somewhat up-to-date, but this is really only driven by a personal distaste of proxies.
The analogy that often comes to mind is that of racing cars. Formula 1 racing is not cheap, but there are other categories of racing available with a smaller barrier to entry. Cannot afford Formula 1, but still want some of the experience, leverage a simulator.
The single LGS within several hours of me that ran monthly vintage events permanently closed over the pandemic. If I am lucky another store will experiment with running similar events. If I am unlucky, playing with friends, or somehow convincing (and teaching) my seven year old son to play are the main options.

I started this thread because I still buy a lot of physical cards. I know that a lot you out there also buy paper cards but only play Vintage on MTGO.
I am reaching a point where I may be playing a lot less Vintage if I cannot play with physical cards. I am just not getting the enjoyment from the game that I get playing physical cards with people in real life.
I bought all of the MH1 and MH2 staples in paper and I have not really bought any of them on MTGO. This makes being competitive on MTGO very hard.
I know I am not the only person looking at it this way and there may not be a solution but it is a problem that I know several players face.

There’s almost no reason to keep up with the vintage cardpool. That said, if you keep up with modern, you’ll likely have all the cards you need for Vintage by default.

@marland_moore Have you tried talking with one of your LGS's to see if they would be interested in hosting monthly proxy Vintage events? If you really want it, you'll probably have to make it happen yourself.

@lienielsen That is my point. I keep with Modern in paper so I have the cards. I just don't keep up on MTGO, so I don't have the cards where it counts.

@revengeanceful I am reaching out to 2 local LGS that have done proxy Vintage in the past. Since Shaman Ben (Ben Perry) stopped organizing Vintage here we just don't have any events in Metro Detroit.

@marland_moore It's easiest for LGSs because they have the audience daily and the location, but all you really need is a location and the will to put in the work to organize. You have the internet at your disposal, so between Discord, Facebook, Twitter, email, and even posting fliers at your LGS (most owners will let you if it's advertising an event that doesn't compete with their business), you should be able to cast a wide net and drum up a decent showing. It is work, and procuring the venue and prize support is the only challenge (unless you do cash split)...and you run the risk of losing $ if you do a guaranteed mox or something.
What I think you're really saying isn't that there's a lack of Vintage in Detroit...but there's a lack of Vintage events people other than yourself are putting in the effort to organize.
